
A former champion won the foot race, which began at 7:30 a.m. The 2009 men’s foot race winner Sammy Kitwara, of Kenya, won the title again, finishing in 28 minutes and 5 seconds.“I feel very good,” he told Channel 2 Sports Director Zach Klein at the finish line.Another Kenyan, Matthew Kisorio, took second place. The female winner was Werknesh Kidane, of Ethiopia.
She finished in 31 minutes and 22 seconds.Most of the race participants were chosen in a lottery. Those who signed up for the race came from every state except South Dakota and Nevada, and there were runners from 20 different countries participating.
Organizers said, with the 2012 Olympics just around the corner, the race likely featured some runners expected to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.Peachtree Road, Buckhead Loop and Phipps Boulevard were shut down to make way for racers. Piedmont Road is recommended as an alternate.
“My strategy was to go out and win,” said Kitwara following the race.
