Last night V-103 and Frank Ski hosted a private interview and listening party for Soulstress Jill Scott, and her upcoming album at Do at the View Restaurant. The new album, out today is titled The Light of the Sun.

Still having fun in the business after 11 years, Jill’s personality was contagious. She had such a positive vibe, it was hard not to smile or laugh when she did.

Jill opened up about her beginning as a poet, and the first day she just decided to sing. The reactions were amazing, and somewhat surprising to her, but nevertheless, she pursued her career as a singer.

Jill was very candid, and honest about her son, her dating life, and her weight loss.  She mentioned that daily tasks, like walking up the 19 stairs in her home with her son became a chore. She wanted to feel better, and she does with the help of trainer Scott Parker, now able to race up the steps.

She said she doesn’t cut anything out of her diet, but she definitely has less. I loved the point she made that its important to not turn a snack into a meal! *giggles because I am guilty*

One of her songs is about waiting until the 5th date, while another expresses how blessed she is. When Frank Ski asked her how she was able to get through the end of her marriage, having a child, and being single again-  Jill said it was a part of life.

She admitting to taking a hit, because no one wants it to happen, but it is apart of life. She said it was somewhere between 8 to 11 months, for the period that wasn’t so good. And we all know how that is. The recovery.

While listening to the songs last night, you could tell that the audience approved and the sway of Jill’s head, that she was proud of her music.  I can’t wait to download it today from itunes. There were about 6 songs that moved me in the first few seconds.

She even did a song live and acapella and the audience cheered her on.

The Light Of The Sun which is out today,  features appearances by rappers Paul Wall, Doug E. Fresh, and Eve and covers the rocky terrain of love, longing and loss. The first single, “So in Love,” is a duet with Anthony Hamilton.

Former Atlanta Mayor, Bill Campbell came out to see  Jill, who he believes is the best vocalists out. Wale, who had just landed in Atlanta within the hour, told Jill that he rushed over because he loved her and to personally ask that she do a song with him.

Jill talked about the hip hop artists that she listened to, and she said she is currently listening to Wu Tang (taking it back), she loves Rick Ross, and she even let out a little mmmmm, when she mentioned how good Miguel was!

Jill Scott gave, great answers  to audience questions between providing great music for the listening party, while she kicked back about 3 Lemon Drops. (note to self: Try the Leomon Drops at Do)

She was more than friendly, great personality, and made her way through the audience to shake hands and take a few pictures. (and she looked great- not skinny, but a nice size!)

In my opinion this album is complete. There is something for everyone, without straying away from who Jill is and what she does best. The song with Dougie Fresh, will grab you from the first beat.  And there are also some tracks that will make you want to dim the lights.

GO out and grab this cd today, its good.

Special thanks to V-103 for the invite!
