Jumping the Broom is as much about the importance of family as it is about finding true love. The all star cast includes Angela Bassett, Laz Alonso, Paula Patton, Loretta Devine, Tasha Smith, Romeo Miller, Deray Davis, Julie Bowen, Valerie Petiford, Meagan Good, and Mr. Funny himself, Mike Epps.

The films producers are Bishop T. D. Jakes who makes a special guest appearance, and Tracy Edmonds. They team up with director Salim Akil, of “The Game,” to create this romantically funny, yet heartfelt flick.

Laz Alonso (Jason Taylor) and Paula Patton (Sabrina Watson) have a whirlwind romance. He proposes to her within six months of dating and they plan to marry on Martha’s Vineyard before moving to China for Sabrina’s job.

There’s only one small problem – The Watsons and the Taylors have never met!

One family is a wealthy uptown crew and the other is blue-collar and downtown highlighting the socioeconomic differences from the start.

While the movie explores tradition and values, loyalty and trust, jealousy and love, it uncovers some real family problems and struggles are usually not addressed by mothers and sons in our community. In a very beautiful package from the vineyard to the clothes, and the people in the movie- the scenes no matter how troubling are vibrant and bright.

Celebrating and poking fun at the African – American culture, the movie brings the laughs. The white wedding planner, played by Julie Bowen, for example, brings some lighthearted humor in trying to understand some of the cultural differences, and she is hilarious. But if you are anything like me, you will want to take your tissue, once the drama unfolds, and you will find yourself laughing out loud at some of the tom foolery displayed.

I appreciated the real issues that were faced, and the perspective shown through the eyes of each participant of the wedding. There is something in this film for everyone. It’s not a complete chick flick, more of a relationship eye opener, with a clear lesson of love.

My mother and I saw Jumping the Broom on Mother’s Day, and we couldn’t have made a better selection. We enjoyed being able to self reflect from each of our own perspectives- me a future bride, and she, a strong willed mother/mother in law to be.

So if you haven’t already check out this film, it’s definitely worth it. Support a film that has little to no profanity, no sex, and a message.  I give it an A and you will also.
