Is Being Sensitive My Flaw…

thought thursday…

crying-tears

I am a cry baby in the worst sense of the word. Example, I cried during the preview of Akeelah and the Bee. I believe the look in the eyes of the homeless real or pretend. I always cheer for the underdog, and I will cry over and over on the final scenes of my over watched favorite flicks.

I don’t know how or why I am so sensitive to matters of the heart. I feel sorry for people at the right times and I allow too much to pull on my heart strings. Some of it could be the way I was raised, perhaps. My mother is sensitive. Some of it, believe it or not is because of my Libra sign.

We are very diplomatic and are able to see all sides in a situation.  People close to me have the power to bruise my feelings while strangers, I could care less. When in a verbal battle, even if being chastised, I refrain from using a persons background or previous low points to gain victory for fear of hurting one’s feelings, because I don’t actually want to hurt anyone, even when they are hurting me.

I have been told that I take things too seriously, while I inform others that they are too mean and uncaring. So I have been faced with this decade old question, of how do you stop being sensitive? How do I stop the waterworks when  Big Momma dies in Soul Food? How do I not take attacks on my character or physical being to heart? People will encourage you to get tougher skin- but no one is explaining the proper exercise and how many reps are required…

I wish I knew the answer. Maybe you shouldn’t fight what you God created you to be. Why conform to the harshness of others? The world needs more sensitivity. Don’t fight to be something you’re not – treat it as a strength and dismiss the people who keep hurting you. Don’t give them the power anymore. However, if someone has the audacity to come at you with hurtful things – you can at least take care of yourself and end the conversation or “hush them up” with a few reminders. Why not defend yourself the way you would defend your loved ones? Just be you!! It’s the only character you know as well in the “only story you know best!” Don’t mess with the main character’s soul, girl!
